The health food scene in the Klang Valley is definitely picking up, and these newcomers are culinary game changers:
Sure, banh mis and burgers might be the big thing right now in the food mecca of Klang Valley, but there’s also a burgeoning health food movement making its mark on our grease-laden food map.
These recently opened health-food spots pump in new energy to a rather tired healthy eating scene, and we welcome them with open arms:
Where: 10 Jalan PJU 8/3A, Damansara Perdana, PJ (Phone: +603 7710 0129 | Facebook: Konscious Cafe)
With an interior of rustic wooden accents and ambient lighting, Konscious is a cosy spot to tuck into your organic, free-range meals, as well as sip on ethically sourced coffee or a smoothie. The open kitchen concept invites you to peek into how your food is prepared, while the menu features delicious Eastern and Western favourites like Vietnamese beef noodles, falafel burgers, hazelnut cake and more, all concocted without refined flour, sugar, dairy, or wheat. If you’re looking for a guilt-free meal, Konscious will rock your socks.
2. Upbeat Health Bar
Where: Level 2, Avenue K, Jalan Ampang, KL (Phone: +6017 606 2833 | Facebook: Upbeat Health Bar)
Aptly placed near the Fitness First gym in Avenue K, this tucked-in-the-wall health bar might be tiny, but it serves up big points on health. Their colourful menu includes a selection of protein shakes, smoothies, cold-pressed juices as well as freshly made tortilla wraps. If you’re working in the KLCC area and are looking for something quick and healthy for lunch, this definitely fits the bill.
Where: L11, Ground Floor, Jalan Telawi 3, Bangsar. (Phone: +6017 325 3663 | Facebook: Ashley’s Bangsar)
Run by the same people behind Living Food Bistro (see our previous write-up here), Ashley’s menu features similar items but with some added flair. Sitting in their brightly lit yet cosy little cafe where a tree stretches towards the ceiling, you’ll find yourself feeling awfully zen. The menu? It’s filled with intriguing items like a mushroom foie gras, organic dim sum, spinach mai kai (instead of loh mai kai), quail stews and more, so you’ll definitely find something that’ll satisfy your tummy without sacrificing your health. Ashley’s also serves brunch so be sure to check them out over the weekends!
4. RGB@The Bean Hive
Where: 36, Jalan Damai, Off Jalan Ampang, KL. (Phone: +603 2181 1329 | Facebook: RGB & The Bean Hive)
What used to be our favourite coffee place (RAW Coffee) has now relocated and re-branded itself as RGB@The Bean Hive. Now housed in a white bungalow in a quiet neighbourhood near Jalan Ampang, RGB is still serving up great coffee as well as a menu of vegetarian sandwiches, pastas, burgers, and even vegan desserts. With a reading corner and plenty of tables to go around, we must say we like the all new RGB @The Bean Hive.
Bonus #5. Huck’s Cafe
Where: 22, Jalan Abdullah, Off Jalan Bangsar, KL. (Phone: +603 2282 2126 / +6012 604 8719 | Facebook: Huck’s Cafe)
This is not your typical walk-in cafe (and it’s not new either), but it’s an interesting home dining experience. Headcount is limited as Huck Seng, the brains behind the whole concept, wants to be able to deliver a personalised service to those who are dining with them. The fare is Mediterranean and European, lovingly made from fresh (not frozen) meats and organic herbs. MSG is a sin here as well. You’ll need to RSVP ahead of time and decide on a menu (available on their Facebook page). While this isn’t strictly a “health” dining establishment, we love it as it serves real, home-cooked food with a heart.
